Responding to ‘Field Notes from Ferns’
Diocesan Pastoral Council – Journeying Together in the Spirit
Using the SPIRIT Model
S – STORY
A fresh collection of faith stories has been published: ‘Field Notes from Ferns: Journeying Together in the Spirit’. These are not abstract accounts but living testimonies, humble field notes gathered from across our diocese. They capture the pulse of God’s people responding to the synodal call, walking together amid joy, challenge and quiet transformation. Real change is happening and it is good to focus on stories that inspire us. In these Field Notes we see the Church today – alive, humble, courageous and on the move.
P – PERSPECTIVES
We gather around these stories and hear different voices: our brothers and sisters collaborating in mission, embracing uncertainty and rooted in whatever staring point each community finds themselves. There is profound hope, resilient faith, generous goodwill and the healing balm of being truly listened to. Openness to the new stirs within us for these stories remind us that religion is not solitary piety but encounter and discipleship lived in community. In these stories, difference is not a threat but an honest gift. Christ invites us to sit patiently with one another, seeking always the win-win of mutual love rather than division.
I – INSIGHTS
These field notes reveal a deep sense of belonging, a quiet pride in being woven into God’s greater story. Pragmatism flows not from cynicism but from attentiveness to pastoral reality. We marvel at the courage of the story tellers, those unafraid of failure, those who may not loudly profess fervent faith yet choose trust, carrying others through trials. Service emerges as the heartbeat of holiness for all the baptised, a universal call that transcends assisting clergy alone and embraces the priesthood of every believer.
R – RESPONSE
Field Notes from Ferns invites us into deeper conversion. It reminds us that being Church is far richer than Sunday observance, it is the daily relationships of people living in co-responsibility. Synodality breathes both from the grassroots and from leadership; we are called to nurture servant leadership in every parish, to foster transparency and to publicise these signs of hope. Uneven growth challenges us: whose stories remain untold? How might we create new spaces for their telling? These narratives are modern parables, luminous threads revealing the Spirit’s work today. They inspire, encourage and summon us to amplify their message, through celebration, communication and highlighting such voices for training and formation so that more may recognise God present among us.
I – INTEGRATION
Here synodality takes flesh: listening becomes action and stories shape our shared vision. We re-commit to a continuing pastoral approach, broadening our missionary horizon, modelling co-responsibility, sowing seeds of change and rejoicing in agents of the Kingdom. In this way, we discern where the Spirit beckons the Council to focus, allowing these lived testimonies to form hearts and minds across the diocese.
T – THEOLOGY
Beneath every story lies a theology of hope, trust and Easter possibility. Christ walks with us still as on the road to Emmaus, Emmanuel in our midst. Positivity is no mere optimism but practical faith that notices the divine in every place: in working together as a sign of the Kingdom, in challenges transformed into mission and in the humble courage of God’s people. These field notes whisper that the Spirit breathes life into the ordinary, inviting us ever deeper into communion, mission and the joy of the Gospel today.
